“Best app for learning phonics ... Everything is taught exactly as it would be in school, with the same methods as outlined in the national curriculum” iPad for Kids 2013

PocketPhonics teaches kids letter sounds, first words and handwriting. It is used in over 300 UK primary schools, and tens of thousands of homes. It follows the national curriculum, and independent research (see appsinmypocket.com/research) found children learnt nine times faster using PocketPhonics compared to a classroom lesson.

“PocketPhonics teaches the basics of reading and writing to young kids. Most surprising? It seems to work.” 148apps.com
"One of my children’s favorite early reading apps" New York Times
“This app feels much like a private tutoring session for early readers with emphasis on letter sounds and writing.” everythingmom.com
-“If you are working on phonics for your kids, this is the best application to have.” Technology in Education
-“This app feels much like a private tutoring session for early readers with emphasis on letter sounds and writing.” everythingmom.com
-“PocketPhonics is seriously educational and I think it’s a terrific tool for helping early readers. You can tell that a ton of thought and research was put into it and best of all, they talked and listened to teachers. It shows.” iPhoneMom.com
-“When it comes to learning apps for young learners and early readers, there is no better choice than abc PocketPhonics." ipad-applications.neiia.com

We’ve also had coverage in the Daily Telegraph and Guardian.

PocketPhonics is split in to 12 groups of letter sounds, each group is followed by a set of storybooks for those letter sounds. Kids read storybooks on the right level for them.

The phonics levels are included in the price of this "basic edition", but the storybooks cost extra. PocketPhonics Stories (full edition) includes the stories in the price.

In the first group of letter sounds, there are six sounds to master before the child will be able to read their first storybook. Most children aged 4+ start to read their first storybook within 10 weeks if they use the app for 15 mins everyday.

Parents and teachers can easily monitor children’s progress online. Teachers and parents are emailed a certificate when a child completes a task.

Children can tap an unfamiliar word in a story, and the app will sound out the letters to help the child understand what the word says. They can tap again to hear the word and see a picture that illustrates its meaning.

As the child reads a story, the app tests whether they can read some of the key words. At the end of the story, it quizzes the child on all new words in that story.

Children master the following skills:

* writing letters (more UK handwriting style options than any other app)
* recognising 72 letter sounds (e.g. ‘ch’ are the letters that make the initial sound in ‘chat’)
* blending letter sounds together to make words (e.g ‘ch-a-t’)
* hearing a word and selecting its written form (e.g. the app says, “chat”, the child has to select ‘chat’ from a group of words)

How it works

Pros and cons of PocketPhonics (basic edition) app for iPhone and iPad

PocketPhonics (basic edition) app good for

Very good app!!! My kid loves it! Can you make it in spanish and french? Thank any way!!!
I was surprised how well my 3yr old traced each letter and drew the letters on her own. Thanks and great job!
I wished the letters were alphabetical so that the kids can know tht they are writing them in order. I like the tracing by computer and then the child traces. Good app
Helped my little daughter who is in first grade excel in sounds. Thanks for improved sound, colour and animation quality, daughter likes it even more. I only recommend more combinations and drills added for tion, sion, ci, more
This is a very nice app my child is now learn sounds and to spell and finds this app very fun and useful. Maybe you could ad more words to work on and maybe a button the gives a word the letter starts with example sound of e - elephant. I find kids have a hard time with vowels so a word might help them figure out the different sounds by relating it to a word a - apple e - elephant i - igloo o - oyster and u - umbrella Other than that thos app was worth every penny 5 stars hands down Thanks Blessings
Has helped my 6 year old increase his vocabulary. Now mine needs help!

Some bad moments

I tried the free version and thought this was a great app and just needed an expansion of more words. I purchased the payed version only to find there was no difference. Not impressed! Payed & Free versions are the same ???
I paid $3 for a pretty basic boring app...not sure where all the games are - didnt show up on my iPhone! Not going to bother showing it to my 6 year old...
Worst app ever....After my 4 year old played with this for a while, I asked here some of the alphabet and she didnt know, instead she just made the sound and thought that was the letter!!!! Simple fix, make the app say the letter before saying the sound!!!! Deleted this app after I bought it.
Its critical to be consistent when teaching a child to read and sound out letters. App is far too buggy! It shows a wrong slides for its audio far too often for my liking. If app were only two or three dollars, Id be more willing to overlook. In this case, the high/premium app cost does not equate to a high/premium quality design and function. Look elsewhere for your spelling needs... In my case, I think a large Magna Doodle would have been a much better use of my hard-earned $$$.
I dont want to register.. So please STOP asking for names, emails and personal info. This is kids app not a socialization app. If I wanted Facebook or Twitter I can download them from the App Store.
Doesnt work. App asks parents to enter the answer to a simple addition problem (such as 8+6) to gain access to the app. Unfortunately, when you enter the correct answer (such as 14), it tells you that youve entered the wrong answer and prompts you to try again. No matter how many times you enter the correct answer, it keeps you locked out. I even purposely tried wrong answers and it still didnt work.
